Summary

Using a wavy bond for defining the racemate of a component with one center of chirality is straightforward:


   


However, this approach fails for components with multiple chiral centers, since placing a wavy bond on each center does not define the relative arrangement of the substituents (for example, whether they are in a syn or anti relationship). In such cases, ChemBytes Draw lets you assign a racemate definition to the overall structure of one arbitrary enantiomer of the racemate, rather than on its individual substituents, which unambiguously maintains the relative stereochemistry. Thus, in the example of an optical resolution below, one enantiomer of the racemate is  specified as racemate.
